2007 SF Pride Portraits : 2007 Gay Pride Yearbook

On Sunday June 24, 2007 between the hours of 10am - 1:30pm, during San Francisco's 37th Annual Gay Pride Parade, a photo project ensued capturing just some of the vibrant and diverse faces that make up the gay community. The goal was to see who would want to show their pride for the camera - and the world!

With a lot of help from my friends and family, we set our backdrop against the Art Institute building in the UN Plaza between 7th & 8th Streets on Market St. Before we could even complete setting up people were gathering to see what we were up to. Within 2.5 hours we captured hundreds of smiling, proud faces (with some straight folks too!).

Since many times the media is unable to do it for us, we have here now a small collection of what our community REALLY looks like. Take a look, you may just find yourself.

The photographs have now been assembled into a coffee table book by My Publisher.com and it's now available for purchase online at the following link (copy and paste this link into a new browser window, minus the quotes).

And due to popular demand, we'll be expanding this project in 2008 and possibly in other locations around the US and the world - so stay tuned!!!!

We needed a way to tie faces to names for the portrait project. So we came up with the plan to have all participants fill out the white board with their name and sexuality. As you can see, we had some straight folks show their pride, too!

OK Let me start by saying this wasn't the best year for pride portraits. First, we arrived much later than last year. Second, for some odd reason, the sunshine was not shining on our spot the same way it did last year (global warming or something? not sure...). And lastly, my damn backdrop is too small for all the people who like to squeeze together for their pictures.

So I'm not terribly impressed with this set of pictures, I'm sorry to say. Not because of the models, as you can see there was plenty of enthusiasm. But I'm all about the finished product and this collection of pictures is not as compelling as 2007. But I'm not giving up either. Now I'll get busy working in Photoshop to clean up the backgrounds and make it all about the faces.

Keep checking back for updates, over time these pictures will be improved to look more like those taken in 2007. For 2007, the photographs have now been assembled into a coffee table book by My Publisher.com and it's now available for purchase online at the following link (copy and paste this link into a new browser window, minus the quotes).
